England’s Nigerian-born winger Noni Madueke thrilled to score first goal for Three Lions

England winger Noni Madueke has expressed his delight after netting his maiden international goal in Tuesday night’s emphatic 5-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Serbia in Belgrade.

The Arsenal forward was among the scorers alongside Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa, as Gareth Southgate’s side extended their lead at the top of their qualifying group and moved closer to sealing a place at next summer’s FIFA World Cup in North America.

Born in London to Nigerian parents, Madueke’s rise has been closely followed on both sides of the footballing divide.

His latest display underlined the promise that made him one of England’s brightest prospects and further strengthened his claim for a regular starting berth in Southgate’s squad.

Speaking after the game, Madueke said: “I’m delighted for the team performance, for the win. It was a really top performance. Thank God I was able to score my first goal, just a top day overall.”

The Arsenal attacker described the strike as a moment he had long envisaged.

“It was a great flick from Morgan (Rogers), as soon as it broke for me I had one thought – to go as fast as I could and go for goal. It was a great feeling, something you work for and dream of when you are a lot younger. For it to come to fruition is a great feeling.”

England’s dominant win in the Serbian capital not only boosted their qualification chances but also showcased the depth of emerging talent at Southgate’s disposal, with Madueke’s landmark moment capping a perfect night for the visitors.
