2026 World Cup qualifiers: South Africa and Nigeria share spoils in tense battle

South Africa and Nigeria played out a tense 1-1 draw at the Free State Toyota Stadium on Tuesday in the CAF 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The match had moments of drama but ended with both sides settling for a point.

The home fans had something to cheer early when William Troost-Ekong mistakenly put the ball into his own net in the 25th minute, handing South Africa the lead. The noise inside the stadium lifted as Bafana Bafana pressed forward, encouraged by the advantage.

Nigeria, however, showed their resilience. Just before the break, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru swung in a precise cross that found Calvin Bassey, who rose high to head home the equalizer in the 44th minute. The timing of the goal cut short South Africa’s celebrations and shifted momentum.

The second half was cagey, with both teams struggling to create clear chances. Possession was evenly contested, but neither side could find a breakthrough.

After eight games, South Africa sit top of Group C with 17 points, while Nigeria follow with 11. Both teams now turn to October, where South Africa face Zimbabwe and Nigeria meet Lesotho.
