Emmanuel Arokodare strikes as Nigeria defeat Rwanda to revive World Cup hopes

Emmanuel Arokodare came off the bench to score the decisive goal as Nigeria secured a vital 1-0 win over Rwanda in Uyo, boosting their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.

The Super Eagles, under mounting pressure after victories by Benin and South Africa the previous day, delivered at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

After a cagey and uneventful first half, Arokodare broke the deadlock six minutes into the second period, sparking celebrations across the packed stands. His strike proved enough in a tense contest where Nigeria had to remain patient against a compact and disciplined Rwandan side.

The result marks a much-needed response for Eric Chelle’s men, who had entered the fixture with little margin for error.

Though the Super Eagles enjoyed greater possession and attacking momentum, Rwanda’s defensive organisation forced them into long spells of frustration before Arokodare’s intervention provided the breakthrough.

For Nigeria, the victory could not have come at a more crucial moment. The three points lift them to 10 in Group C, closing the gap to Benin in second place to just a single point.

More importantly, it keeps alive hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup, with a high-stakes clash against leaders South Africa, currently on 16 points, awaiting in the next round of fixtures.

Rwanda, meanwhile, were left to rue a missed opportunity. A positive result would have seen them leapfrog Benin into second place, but defeat leaves them stuck on eight points. With the standings tightening, the Wasps must regroup quickly ahead of their meeting with Zimbabwe if they are to sustain their qualification ambitions.

The Group C picture now shows South Africa at the summit with 16 points, followed by Benin on 11, Nigeria on 10, Rwanda on 8, Lesotho on 6 and Zimbabwe with 4. With only three rounds of matches left to play, every point is set to carry enormous weight in the final outcome of the race to North America.

Nigeria’s performance in Uyo was far from flawless, but the grit and resolve displayed after weeks of pressure underlined their determination to remain in contention. For Arokodare, the night represented a moment of personal triumph, stepping up when his team needed him most.

As the qualifiers intensify, the Super Eagles now turn their focus to South Africa, in a contest that could shape not just their own destiny, but the entire complexion of Group C.
