Swedish-Eritrean Alexander Isak sparks debate over Newcastle legend status

A heated debate has erupted among pundits over whether Alexander Isak deserves “legend” status at Newcastle United following his pivotal role in ending the club’s 70-year trophy drought.

The Swedish striker, whose roots trace back to Eritrea, scored in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool, securing Newcastle’s first silverware since 1959 and instantly becoming a focal point in discussions about the club’s modern heroes.

Isak’s contribution on the pitch, however, has been shadowed by controversy off it, as the 25-year-old’s subsequent transfer pursuit drew criticism from sections of the fanbase.

Despite a relatively brief three-season spell at St James’ Park, he amassed 61 goals and 11 assists in 109 appearances, leaving an indelible mark on the club’s recent history.

His performances have divided opinion, particularly when commentators and former players weigh in on his legacy.

Jason Cundy, speaking on talkSPORT, insisted that Isak’s decisive role in delivering Newcastle’s long-awaited trophy cemented his legendary status.

“Alexander Isak is a Newcastle legend for what he helped them achieve. The first time that they’ve won a trophy, is it since 1959? And he is absolutely integral to win that trophy. Legend,” Cundy argued.

Jamie O’Hara countered, emphasizing the need for longevity and broader impact to earn the “legend” label, citing players from a previous era such as Alan Shearer, Gary Speed, and Faustino Asprilla.

Cundy, however, dismissed these comparisons, asserting that Asprilla’s achievements did not match Isak’s historic Carabao Cup success.

“What did Asprilla win? Isak helped them win their first trophy in 60 [70] years. You have to go down in legendary status.”

O’Hara was then asked to name a player in the Carabao Cup-winning side who is a bigger legend than Isak, to which he posed Bruno Guimaraes.

“Not bigger than Isak,” Cundy responded.
