Gilles Christian Ngnize announces Candidacy against Samuel Eto’o in Fecafoot election
Gilles Christian Ngnize has officially declared his intention to run for the presidency of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), positioning himself as a challenger to current president Samuel Eto’o.
Ngnize, 46, made his announcement during a press conference in Douala on Wednesday, presenting himself as the figure capable of bringing change to Cameroonian football after a turbulent period under Eto’o’s leadership.
A former marketing director within the Cameroon Professional Football League, Ngnize is campaigning on a platform of transparency, ethics, and unity.
While he refrained from mentioning Eto’o directly, Ngnize delivered pointed criticism of Fecafoot’s current management, calling for a new era of accountability.
“Passion has turned into divisions; stadium revenues are negotiated in backrooms,” he said. “This is not our project. Financial resources must be managed rigorously to honor our commitments and ensure players are fully involved in the process.”
The aspiring candidate has pledged to focus on developing football structures, nurturing local talent, and elevating domestic competitions. His remarks signaled a clear intention to distance himself from the controversies and internal disputes that have marked Eto’o’s time in office.
Since assuming the Fecafoot presidency, Eto’o has faced accusations of authoritarian decision-making and ongoing allegations of financial mismanagement, all of which he has consistently dismissed.
His strained relationship with Cameroon’s Minister of Sports, Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, further underscores the divisions within the country’s football administration.
Despite Kombi’s opposition to the timing of the Fecafoot electoral process, Eto’o moved ahead with preparations, fueling speculation that the former international star—nicknamed “the Caterpillar”—intends to seek another term.
His decision to disregard the minister’s stance reflects his strong grip on the federation and determination to maintain his leadership.
Ngnize’s announcement comes at a pivotal moment for Cameroonian football. Eto’o’s presidency, once celebrated for the promise of reform, has been overshadowed by internal rifts, disputes over management decisions, and allegations of misconduct.
Critics argue that these issues have hindered progress in the development of both grassroots and professional football in the country.
By presenting himself as a candidate committed to “restoring sporting ethics,” Ngnize hopes to capture the support of stakeholders frustrated by the current administration.
His emphasis on financial integrity, transparency, and the promotion of homegrown talent positions him as a direct alternative to Eto’o’s leadership style.
As the electoral process moves forward, Cameroonian football fans and officials will closely watch whether Eto’o formally declares his candidacy for another term. If he does, the contest promises to be a highly charged battle between a legendary figure determined to retain power and a challenger seeking to usher in a new chapter for the federation.
With tensions high and expectations rising, the upcoming Fecafoot election is shaping up to be one of the most consequential in the recent history of Cameroonian football.
