French-Malian defender Ibrahima Konaté slammed by Mark Lawrenson after poor Liverpool displays

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson has launched a scathing assessment of Ibrahima Konaté following a string of underwhelming displays at the start of the new Premier League campaign.

The criticism comes despite the Reds winning their first two matches, with defensive frailties overshadowing their perfect record.

Konaté, born in Paris to Malian parents, has been singled out by pundits and supporters for errors that have directly contributed to Liverpool conceding four goals in their opening fixtures.

Once considered a dependable partner to captain Virgil van Dijk, the 26-year-old French international is now under pressure to rediscover his form.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Lawrenson expressed concern about Liverpool’s defensive setup and questioned whether Konaté is the right partner for Van Dijk.

“Yeah I was concerned (about the defence), but I think everybody is at the moment,” he said.

“Van Dijk needs another partner doesn’t he? Because the French boy (Konaté) is all over the place, he’s making all sorts of mistakes.

“But don’t forget they’ve got different players playing at the back right now so it’s not particularly good but it will get better – it’s the way Liverpool are.”

Lawrenson also pointed out that Liverpool could still act in the transfer market before the window closes if defensive issues persist.

His remarks add to the growing scrutiny on Konaté, who entered the summer linked with a move to Real Madrid but has seen his reputation dented by costly mistakes against Bournemouth and Newcastle.

Manager Arne Slot is reportedly monitoring alternatives, with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi high on his list of potential signings. Whether Liverpool make an approach may hinge on Konaté’s ability to recover his composure quickly.
