Algerian midfielder Haris Belkebla named Angers SCO captain for 2025-26 season
Algerian international Haris Belkebla has been appointed captain of Angers SCO for the 2025-26 Ligue 1 campaign, as the club targets top-flight survival.
Head coach Alexandre Dujeux confirmed the decision ahead of Angers’ season opener against Paris FC on Sunday, 17 August. The 31-year-old midfielder, who joined the club exactly a year ago from Saudi side Ohod Club, will wear the armband in place of veteran Pierrick Capelle, whose playing time is expected to be limited this season.
Belkebla, capped 11 times for Algeria, boasts 377 professional appearances across his career. Known for his relentless work rate and leadership qualities, the former Stade Brestois stalwart has quickly established himself as a central figure both on and off the pitch at Stade Raymond-Kopa.
“Haris is a natural leader,” Dujeux said. “He brings people together, leads by example every day, and is respected by the entire squad. His commitment, discipline, and unifying presence make him the right choice for this role.”
Jordan Lefort has been named vice-captain, while fellow midfielder Himad Abdelli is expected to leave the club before the transfer window closes.
Belkebla expressed pride at taking on the captaincy, acknowledging the collective strength of the team. “It’s an honour for me,” he said. “I will do everything I can to live up to the role and help lift the group. We’re a team full of leaders, and it’s the unity of the group that will make the difference this season.”
The Aubervilliers-born midfielder’s journey to captaincy at Angers has been shaped by resilience. After a difficult spell in Saudi Arabia, where he terminated his contract with Ohod Club due to unpaid wages, Belkebla returned to France to reignite his career.
His arrival in Angers last summer marked a fresh start, building on a career largely spent in Brittany, where he represented Tours and rose to prominence at Brest.
Throughout his career, Belkebla has earned a reputation as a player who combines technical quality with tireless commitment. His ability to break up opposition attacks, maintain composure under pressure, and drive his team forward has made him a key figure wherever he has played.
At 31, his appointment as captain not only reflects his influence in the dressing room but also signals Angers’ intent to rely on experienced players in their bid to maintain Ligue 1 status. Belkebla’s leadership will be tested from the outset, with Paris FC presenting a challenging opening fixture.
Beyond club football, his consistent performances could also reignite his prospects with the Algerian national team. Having last featured for the Fennecs some time ago, his form and leadership at Angers may prompt a recall from the national selectors.
For now, Belkebla’s focus remains firmly on guiding Angers through the rigours of a Ligue 1 season. With a mix of youthful energy and seasoned professionals in the squad, the club will look to its new captain to embody the fighting spirit needed to meet its ambitions.
