Tharwat Sweilem, a respected figure in the Egyptian Professional Clubs Association, has made it clear that rules will be upheld after an ugly scene in the Egyptian Premier League’s opening round.
The match saw Al Ahly midfielder Ahmed Mostafa Zizo attacked by Zamalek supporters, sparking outrage among fans and officials alike.
Sweilem confirmed that, under competition regulations, Zamalek will face a financial penalty. “In the coming hours, it will be announced that Zamalek will be fined 100,000 Egyptian pounds for the first time, and if it happens again, the penalty will be doubled to the point of playing without fans, according to the regulations,” he said in televised remarks on Monday night.
He stressed that the Clubs Association is separate from the personal complaint Zizo has filed against Zamalek’s board, adding that their role is to enforce the laws.
On a similar matter, Sweilem noted that if reports confirm Al Ahly fans attacked Modern Sport striker Hossam Hassan, they too will face consequences under the same rules.
