Liverpool should not spend £150m on Swedish-Eritrean striker Alexander Isak – Carragher

Jamie Carragher has cautioned Liverpool against spending £150 million on Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak, insisting the Swedish international is not a necessary addition to the Reds’ attacking options.

Isak, who was born in Sweden to Eritrean parents, has been the subject of strong transfer speculation after reports confirmed that Liverpool had a £110 million offer rejected by Newcastle.

The Magpies are reportedly holding out for £150 million for the 25-year-old, who netted 23 Premier League goals last season.

With RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško choosing Manchester United over Newcastle, the likelihood of Isak leaving St. James’ Park appears increasingly slim.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, former Liverpool defender Carragher questioned the logic of investing such a hefty fee in another striker when the club already added Hugo Ekitike this summer.

“He (Isak) will be an amazing signing but from a fan’s point of view for myself, I don’t want Liverpool to spend £150M on Isak,” Carragher said.

“There’s something about Liverpool buying another striker (Ekitike), and he’s backup. Something about it doesn’t feel right to me.”

Carragher also criticised Isak’s perceived response to rival signings elsewhere in the league: “I look at Isak, and he’s obviously thrown his toys out the pram once Arsenal signed a striker and Liverpool signed a striker. It feels a bit messy to me now.”

Liverpool have already committed over £200 million this transfer window, bringing in Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Ekitike, and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Despite acknowledging the ambition behind the spending, Carragher warned the club may be straying from its traditional transfer strategy.

“In terms of what Liverpool have done in the summer… it doesn’t feel like the Liverpool way of doing things so much,” he added.

While Newcastle are preparing for a potential second offer, Isak’s future may hinge on the club’s ability to secure a replacement before the new season begins.
