Burn says losing Swedish-Eritrean striker Isak ‘would upset’ tight-knit Newcastle squad
Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has admitted that the departure of Alexander Isak this summer would deeply affect the atmosphere in the dressing room, describing the squad as “very close together.”
Isak, who has Eritrean heritage, is reportedly pushing for a move away from St James’ Park and has not been involved in the club’s preseason activities.
The 25-year-old has trained alone and did not join the team for their tour of Asia, with Liverpool reportedly leading the race for his signature.
Speaking to Sky Sports from Singapore, Burn — who made his England debut earlier this year — expressed the impact such a loss would have on the group.
“It’s a question for Alex to answer,” he said. “He’s obviously a big player for us, but we do have a lot of quality in the squad as well. Bringing Anthony (Elanga) in as well, which I think was a great signing.”
He continued: “If we lost any player it would upset our tight-knit group that’s been together two, three years now.
“From our point of view, we just have to control what we can control in the moment.”
Isak joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022 for around £60 million and has since become a key player under manager Eddie Howe.
However, with the player seemingly set on a move, Newcastle may have to reluctantly part ways with one of their biggest stars.
The Magpies are reportedly monitoring RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko as a possible replacement, although competition from Manchester United could complicate matters. Howe is expected to move quickly if Isak’s exit is confirmed.
Newcastle remain determined to keep their striker, but the final decision could hinge on the player’s continued stance.
