Algerian striker Mohamed Amoura misses start of Wolfsburg pre-season due to injury

Algerian striker Mohamed Amoura misses start of Wolfsburg pre-season due to injury

VfL Wolfsburg have begun their preparations for the 2025–26 season without one of their key players, as Algerian international Mohamed Amoura remains sidelined with a concerning muscle injury.

The forward, who enjoyed an impressive debut season in Germany, has been absent from the club’s initial pre-season training sessions, raising questions about his fitness and availability ahead of the Bundesliga opener.

German outlets Kicker and Ligainsider report that Amoura is suffering from a “complex” femoral muscle injury, believed to have been sustained during Algeria’s June international window.

The injury had already ruled him out of Algeria’s friendly match against Sweden, and it now threatens to disrupt his return to club duties.

Wolfsburg have yet to release an official timeline for his recovery, leaving fans and analysts uncertain about whether the 24-year-old will be ready for the start of the domestic campaign.

Amoura’s absence is particularly troubling given his importance to Wolfsburg’s attacking setup. After signing from Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise, the former ES Sétif player made a strong impact in his first season in Germany.

He featured in 34 matches across all competitions, scoring 10 goals and registering 12 assists — a return that quickly attracted interest from rival clubs, including Bayer Leverkusen.

However, Wolfsburg were determined to keep hold of their rising star and reportedly set a hefty price tag of €40 million to ward off suitors.

That valuation now stands in sharp contrast to the current uncertainty surrounding his fitness, casting a shadow over what had been a breakout year for the Algerian.

Injuries are not a new issue for Amoura. He experienced muscle problems at the start of his time with Wolfsburg as well, although he managed to overcome those early setbacks to become a standout performer.

Now, as the new season approaches, his focus is once again on recovery and regaining full match fitness.

His injury also has implications beyond club football. With Algeria set to resume their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign in September, Amoura’s availability is now a source of concern for national team coach Vladimir Petkovic.

The Fennecs are scheduled to face Botswana and Guinea in crucial qualifiers, and the striker’s potential absence could deal a blow to their hopes of securing an early advantage in Group G.

Supporters of both Wolfsburg and Algeria will be hoping that Amoura’s latest setback proves to be only a temporary one. His ability to change games with his speed, creativity, and eye for goal has made him an integral figure for both club and country.

But for now, all eyes are on his recovery timeline — and whether he can return in time to continue his upward trajectory.

As Wolfsburg push ahead with their pre-season plans, the absence of one of their top attacking talents is a sobering reminder of how quickly fortunes can shift in football. Whether Amoura’s injury proves to be a minor disruption or the start of a longer-term issue remains to be seen.
