‘We will try to take him if the conditions are right’ – Barcelona chief confirms interest in Nico Williams

Barcelona sporting director Deco has confirmed that the club is in discussions to sign Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, amid growing interest in the highly-rated Spanish international.

Speaking in an interview, Deco made it clear that any potential move hinges on the player’s commitment to the Catalan project.

Williams, born in Spain to Ghanaian parents, has become one of LaLiga’s most exciting attacking talents.

The 22-year-old’s explosive pace and creativity have earned him admirers across Europe, with his dual heritage also making him a source of pride in Ghana, where his older brother Iñaki represents the national team.

Deco explained the current state of Barcelona’s interest: “There is a clear criterion for a player to come to Barça: first of all he must believe in the project.

“Last year the transfer of Nico did not materialise, although for me at that time the Dani Olmo operation was more of a priority.”

While confirming talks with Williams’ representatives, Deco added that the club is mindful of the formalities required in such negotiations.

“To buy a player you have to follow the correct steps. First you talk to his agents, then you deal with the contractual issues and finally you check whether his club requires the payment of the clause or is open to negotiation,” he noted.

The winger’s release clause stands at €58 million, and Deco acknowledged that this remains a factor in discussions.

“In Nico’s case it is very clear: he has a clause. We met with his agent to find out what the player wants and, from there, we will see if it is possible.”
