Augustin Senghor to seek new term as Senegalese Football Federation President after 16 years in charge
Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) President Augustin Senghor has given the indication that he plans to run for office once again.
According to exclusive information from Leral, the current president made personal calls to several regional league heads on Thursday morning to announce his decision.
“I am a candidate for my own succession,” he is reported to have told them.
With elections just under two months away, Senghor’s announcement has reignited the political landscape in Senegalese football.
The former Mayor of Gorée, who is a lawyer, was first elected as President of FSF in 2009.
Should he be reelected this year, he will complete 20 consecutive years at the helm of the FSF.
Despite criticism regarding the length of his tenure, he remains one of the most enduring and stable federation leaders on the African continent.
He is credited with Senegal’s historic AFCON title triumph in 2021, qualification for the 2022 World Cup, and progress in federal infrastructure development.
However, his critics point to issues with governance, a concentration of decision-making, and limited opportunities for emerging young leaders.
Sources reveal that Senghor has quietly begun rallying support, personally calling several regional officials to inform them of his decision.
Local reports indicate that Augustin Senghor is planning an official campaign launch, which will be preceded by a public announcement of his intent to run for office again.
