Sacha Boey’s role at Bayern Munich remains unclear as the club evaluates its right-back options ahead of the upcoming season.
Signed during the January 2024 transfer window, the Cameroonian defender has struggled to secure a consistent place in the starting line-up, making just 13 appearances in the Bundesliga during the 2024/25 campaign and contributing two assists.
Despite arriving with considerable promise, Boey has found himself in a highly competitive environment at the Allianz Arena, where Bayern boast considerable depth at right-back.
In addition to Boey, the position is also occupied by Konrad Laimer and Josip Stanišić—two players who are both capable of filling the role and have the trust of the coaching staff.
Bayern Munich’s sporting director, Max Eberl, addressed the situation in an interview with journalist Florian Plettenberg, acknowledging the club’s dilemma regarding squad balance in that area of the pitch.
“At right-back, we have Laimer, of course, but also Stanišić and Sacha. That’s really a lot for one position,” Eberl explained. “Sacha is here now and he will play for us. But three right-backs is already a luxury.”
His comments hint at a potential reshuffle or re-evaluation of the squad this summer, as Bayern look to streamline certain areas and address positional overload.
While Eberl stopped short of suggesting Boey would be leaving, the statement leaves open the possibility of changes, particularly if Bayern receive an offer that suits both club and player.
Boey joined Bayern from Galatasaray in a deal that generated significant attention at the time. The 23-year-old had impressed in Turkey’s Süper Lig with his physicality, attacking runs, and defensive reliability.
His performances in European competition also contributed to Bayern’s interest, positioning him as a long-term solution on the right flank.
However, adapting to the demands of the Bundesliga and breaking into Bayern’s star-studded squad has proven more challenging than anticipated. With limited minutes and stiff internal competition, Boey’s future in Munich now appears less certain than when he first arrived.
The Cameroonian international’s situation will likely be one of several key decisions for Bayern as they reshape their squad under the direction of Eberl and the new coaching setup.
Whether Boey remains to fight for his place or seeks regular playing time elsewhere will depend on developments in the transfer market over the coming weeks.
Bayern Munich are no strangers to maintaining depth across all positions, especially given the club’s ambitions across domestic and European competitions.
Yet, the surplus of talent at right-back may ultimately prompt movement to ensure a balanced and manageable roster.
For now, Boey remains a Bayern player. But as pre-season approaches and decisions are made, the club—and the player—will need to determine whether his future lies in Munich or elsewhere.
🚨🔴 A transfer of Sacha #Boey to Galatasaray is currently unlikely. The reason: structure of a potential deal, transfer fee and salary. His market is being explored, with most enquiries at present coming from the Premier League.
