Ez Abde has agreed in principle to join Italian Serie A side Como in a move that could see the Moroccan winger depart Real Betis just two years after arriving in Seville.
According to reports by Italian journalist Nicolo Schira, the 22-year-old is set to sign a long-term deal with Como, which would keep him at the club until 2030.
The ambitious Italian outfit, currently managed by former Spain international Cesc Fàbregas, is now engaged in negotiations with Betis to finalise the transfer.
The potential move comes as something of a surprise, particularly given Abde only renewed his contract with the Andalusian club last October, extending his stay until 2029.
At the time, the extension appeared to signal Betis’s confidence in the winger’s long-term value. Manager Manuel Pellegrini had publicly praised Abde as recently as April, highlighting his explosiveness and positive impact on the team.
However, despite that backing, Abde’s output in La Liga has been modest. Over 32 league appearances this past season, he managed just two goals and two assists. According to performance data compiled by DataMB, he recorded the worst discrepancy between actual goals and expected goals (xG) across Europe’s top five leagues, with a differential of 6.4 in the negative — an indication of missed opportunities in front of goal.
Still, the former Barcelona academy product remains highly rated for his technical ability and versatility. Journalist Orazio Accomando reports that Como are particularly drawn to Abde’s capacity to operate effectively on either flank, a trait that aligns well with Fàbregas’s tactical preferences.
Como, who finished 10th in Serie A last season, have made no secret of their desire to reinforce their attacking options. Abde’s potential arrival would add to a growing pool of offensive talent, which could include Senegalese forward Assane Diao and Gambian international Alieu Fadera, both of whom could compete for minutes alongside the Moroccan if the deal is finalised.
The Italian side appears to have moved ahead of other suitors, including Turkish club Beşiktaş, who were reportedly preparing an offer of their own according to local press sources.
While Abde’s performances in La Liga may not have fully met expectations, he did make a total of 49 appearances across all competitions for Betis, registering nine goals and five assists, respectable figures for a winger still developing his consistency at the top level.
For Abde, a move to Italy under the guidance of a coach like Fàbregas, himself a product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, could represent an opportunity to revitalise his career and unlock the potential that once made him one of Spain’s most promising young wide players.
Talks between the two clubs are ongoing and while no official announcement has been made, all indications suggest that Ez Abde is poised for a fresh start in Serie A, one that could define the next phase of his career.
