Toulon Tournament: Mali U20 secure penalty shootout victory over France to revive campaign

Mali’s U20 side reignited their Toulon Tournament hopes with a dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout win over hosts France on Friday, following a 1-1 draw in regular time.

The victory marked a significant turnaround for the West African team, who suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Panama in their opening Group A fixture.

Determined to recover and stay in contention, Mali displayed greater cohesion and urgency in their second match of the tournament.

It was Gaoussou Diakité who gave Mali an early advantage. The forward found the net in the 17th minute, capitalising on a lapse in the French defence to put the Aiglons in front.

The goal reflected Mali’s more focused start, as they looked to set the tone against a talented French squad.

France responded with composure and began to assert control as the first half progressed. Their persistence paid off in the 38th minute when Tidiam Gomis struck the equaliser.

The forward latched onto a well-timed through ball, finishing smartly past the Malian goalkeeper to bring the hosts level before half-time.

Despite several chances for both sides in the second half, neither team was able to break the deadlock. Mali threatened through counter-attacks, while France maintained possession and pressed high, but neither managed to convert in the final third.

With the scores tied at the end of regulation time, the match moved directly to penalties to determine the winner. In the tense shootout, Mali held their nerve, converting five spot-kicks to France’s four.

The result was met with celebration by the Malian bench, as the team claimed a morale-boosting win in front of a largely pro-France crowd.

The result keeps Mali’s hopes of advancing in the prestigious Maurice Revello Tournament alive, with their final group stage match set against Saudi Arabia on Monday.

A win in that match could see them progress, depending on other results in Group A.

The performance was a testament to Mali’s resilience and ability to recover from setbacks. After a disappointing loss to Panama, they showed tactical discipline, improved organisation, and mental strength to overcome one of the tournament’s favourites.

France, meanwhile, will be left to reflect on a missed opportunity to assert early dominance in the group. Despite a strong response after conceding, their inability to finish off chances proved costly in the shootout.

The hosts now face pressure heading into their remaining fixtures, with qualification far from guaranteed.

Mali’s victory over France adds a compelling twist to Group A, where all teams remain in contention. With one match left in the group stage, the tournament remains finely poised  and Mali’s comeback has undoubtedly re-energised their campaign.
