Spanish outfit FC Sevilla triumphed over Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in a pre-FIFA Club World Cup friendly match on Wednesday.
The match, held at the Stade Mohamed V in an electrifying atmosphere ended 1-0 in favor of the La Liga outfit. The first half of the much-anticipated clash ended in a pulsating goalless draw, as both teams struggled to find the back of the net.
However, Gerard Fernandez’s strike in the 50th-minute mark ensured Sevilla prevailed over the Moroccan club in a high-stake friendly. Sevilla capitalized on a defensive error, intercepting a poor clearance by WAC’s goalkeeper and slotting the ball into an empty net.
Wydad showed promising moments throughout the game, especially in the final minutes, pushing for an equalizer. However, Sevilla’s goalkeeper Álvaro Ferllo held firm, closing down a late opportunity and keeping the Moroccan side scoreless.
The match forms part of Wydad Casablanca’s preparation for the upcoming Club World Cup tournament to be stated in the USA. As one of the four clubs expected to represent Africa at the revived Club World Cup competition, Wydad are aiming to make a meaningful impact at the tournament.
They are expected to take on Portuguese powerhouse FC Porto before the commencement of the Club World Cup on June 14.
The African giants are paired in Group G against Manchester City, Juventus, and Al-Ain. Wydad will open their account at the tournament on June 18 against Manchester City before taking on Juventus and Al-Ain.
