Van Gaal: But Why Didn’t He Bring in Tim Krul?

Van Gaal’s Unconventional Semi-Final Decisions Fall Short Against Argentina

Louis van Gaal’s tactical choices in the World Cup semi-final against Argentina on Wednesday caught many by surprise, as the Dutch coach was unable to replicate the substitution success that propelled the Netherlands past Costa Rica in the previous round.

In the quarter-final shootout against Costa Rica, Van Gaal famously brought on goalkeeper Tim Krul specifically for penalties—a move that proved decisive in securing victory. Expectations were high that the Dutch coach would attempt a similar strategy against Argentina.

However, Van Gaal had already used all three of his substitutions during regular time, preventing him from making a goalkeeper change for the shootout. Speaking after the match, Van Gaal explained, “If I had the opportunity to replace the goalkeeper, I would have done so, but I had already made my three changes and no longer had the possibility.”

He detailed his substitutions: Bruno Martins Indi was taken off after receiving a booking and showing signs of fatigue; Nigel de Jong, returning from injury, was unable to last the entire match; and Robin van Persie was replaced due to exhaustion. “I had no other choice but to replace him,” Van Gaal added.

Unfortunately for the Netherlands, the gamble did not pay off. Argentina’s goalkeeper denied two of the Dutch penalty takers, while all the Albiceleste shooters found the back of the net, ending the Netherlands’ hopes of reaching the final.

Van Gaal’s side, finalists in 2010, will now face hosts Brazil in the third-place play-off on Saturday evening. Meanwhile, the World Cup final will see Germany take on Argentina in what promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the tournament.
