The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (RMF) has clarified that no final decision has been reached regarding the future of Mohamed Wahbi as coach of the Morocco U-20 team.
Wahbi faced criticism after leading the team to a runner-up finish at the recently concluded U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The team fell short of the continental title, having lost 1-0 against South Africa, a goal emphasised by CAF President Fouzi Lekjaa prior to the tournament.
A federation spokesperson told Kooora that dissatisfaction is evident within Moroccan football circles, particularly among officials like Lekjaa, who had backed Wahbi with substantial support and resources aimed at securing the championship.
“There is a state of discontent prevailing within Moroccan football circles, led by Fouzi Lekjaa, who provided Wahbi with significant support and all the necessary tools to succeed and achieve the title.”
“Lekjaa sees this team as the nucleus for representing Moroccan football in the 2030 World Cup, but no decision has been made yet. Participation and performance are being evaluated through specialised reports prepared by experts,” he noted.
Wahbi was appointed by the federation to succeed Said Chiba, who stepped down to take the head coach role at FUS Rabat in Morocco’s domestic league.
