Chelsea centre-back Benoit Badiashile has described how crucial goals were in quelling the spirited home support during their 4-1 triumph over Djurgarden in the UEFA Europa Conference League semifinal first leg on Thursday.
The French-born defender, who has Congolese roots, played a key role in a composed defensive performance as Chelsea dominated the evening in Stockholm.
The victory gives the Blues a commanding lead ahead of the return leg at Stamford Bridge, as they seek a spot in the final of Europe’s third-tier competition.
Speaking after the match, Badiashile acknowledged the early pressure from Djurgarden and credited Chelsea’s ability to control proceedings once the breakthrough came.
“First of all we are happy with the win and we knew that it could be a tough game but we managed it well and we go back with the win,” he said.
“The first ten or 15 minutes were tough for us. We tried to control the game after so the early goal really helped us a lot.”
Badiashile also spoke about the defensive unit’s cohesion.
“We have a good relationship as a defence. I like to play with them. We try to work together and aim for a clean sheet,” he added.
Touching on the intensity of the crowd at the Tele2 Arena, Badiashile admitted the noise levels were impressive until Chelsea began to find the net.
“We knew that the second half would be tough as well, so Enzo (Maresca, manager) told us to keep going and to score more goals. It was a nice atmosphere and we won so we are happy.”
The 23-year-old was full of praise for young defender Josh Acheampong, who featured on the night. “Josh is a really good player who can be a top, top player. He’s someone who loves to listen and to work so we will try to help him reach the highest level.”
