Algerian midfielder Houssem Aouar attracts European interest amid potential summer return

Houssem Aouar could be on the verge of returning to European football as the Algerian international midfielder draws interest from several clubs across the continent following a stint in Saudi Arabia with Al Ittihad.

Currently contracted to the Saudi Pro League side, Aouar is reportedly eager to rejoin a more competitive footballing environment.

The 25-year-old, who began his professional career at Olympique Lyonnais, is understood to be open to a move that would offer greater exposure and a higher level of play—conditions he believes are essential to fulfilling his potential and regaining prominence on the international stage.

According to sources close to the matter, Aouar’s ambitions have not gone unnoticed. A number of European clubs are closely monitoring his situation, drawn by his technical ability, vision, and composure on the ball, attributes that made him one of Ligue 1’s most promising midfielders before his move to the Gulf.

In France, both Olympique de Marseille and Lille OSC are reportedly considering bringing Aouar back to Ligue 1.

Marseille, currently seeking reinforcements to rejuvenate their midfield and add creativity, could benefit from Aouar’s familiarity with the league and his proven capacity to influence matches from central areas.

Lille, similarly, are eyeing the playmaker as a potential asset in their European qualification campaigns next season.

Meanwhile, interest is also brewing in the Premier League. Bournemouth are said to be exploring the possibility of signing Aouar, viewing him as a player who could bring technical finesse and attacking intelligence to their midfield unit.

A move to England would present a fresh challenge for the Algerian, whose style and tactical awareness could translate well to the intensity and physicality of the Premier League.

Aouar’s potential departure from Al Ittihad comes less than a year after joining the Saudi club, where he has experienced limited impact in comparison to his earlier years in France.

Despite occasional flashes of brilliance, he has reportedly struggled to adapt fully to the demands of the Saudi Pro League and is now seeking a return to an environment where he can thrive on a regular basis.

Throughout his time at Lyon, Aouar earned a reputation as one of the most technically gifted midfielders of his generation, making over 170 appearances for the club and playing a key role in their run to the UEFA Champions League semi finals in 2020.

His ability to operate in both deeper and more advanced midfield roles makes him a versatile option for clubs seeking balance and creativity in the middle of the park.

The coming weeks could be crucial as Aouar and his representatives weigh their options. With the summer transfer window approaching, discussions are expected to intensify, especially as clubs firm up their recruitment strategies.

While nothing has been finalised, all indications suggest that Aouar’s return to European football is a matter of when, not if.

For the player himself, a move back to Europe may not only reignite his club career but also enhance his standing with the Algerian national team ahead of future international competitions.
