Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has expressed sympathy for striker Eddie Nketiah as the former Arsenal forward endures a difficult first season at Selhurst Park.
Nketiah, born in England to Ghanaian parents, joined the Eagles in August 2024 in a £30 million deal from Arsenal.
Despite high expectations, the 25-year-old has struggled to make an impact, registering just one goal in 24 Premier League appearances, with only seven starts.
Glasner, however, defended the England international’s efforts, highlighting his dedication and work ethic.
“It’s not time to sum up Eddie’s season now, but he’s so hard-working. Sometimes I feel a little bit sad for him, personally, when I see all his effort,” the Austrian coach said.
The manager cited a recent match against Newcastle United as an example of Nketiah’s misfortune.
“For example, Newcastle he comes on when we’re 5-0 down. It’s the worst situation you can have as a player.
“I had this once in my career and I didn’t really like it. He had two or three chances. At the end he could score and then he slipped.”
Glasner remains optimistic that Nketiah’s perseverance will eventually yield rewards.
“It looks like, sometimes, things don’t go well for him. But I spoke to him afterwards, because I see him every day working.
“And there will come a day when he gets paid for all his effort. For me personally, it feels like they didn’t come now until now.”
Nketiah’s sole Premier League goal came in a 2-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion earlier this month. He also contributed two goals in the EFL Cup and one in the FA Cup this season.
Crystal Palace currently sit mid-table in the Premier League, with Glasner aiming to build momentum as the season progresses.
