French-Guinean defender Dayot Upamecano to undergo knee surgery in Austria

Dayot Upamecano

Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano is set to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his left knee after struggling with persistent discomfort for several weeks.

The club confirmed on Wednesday that the French international of Guinea-Bissau descent will be sidelined for approximately six weeks as he recovers from the procedure.

Le Parisien reports that the surgery will be performed by renowned knee specialist Professor Dr. Christian Fink in Innsbruck, Austria.

Fink has previously worked with Bayern stars such as Manuel Neuer and Joshua Kimmich, making him a trusted figure in the club’s medical setup.

Upamecano’s absence will be a significant blow for Bayern, as he is set to miss several key fixtures, including both legs of their Champions League quarter-final against Inter Milan on April 8 and 16.

Additionally, the 26-year-old will be unavailable for crucial Bundesliga matches during Bayern’s push for the league title.

However, if his recovery goes according to plan, he could return in time for a potential Champions League final on May 31, should Bayern progress that far in the competition.

Despite the setback, Upamecano’s availability for international duty remains promising. The center-back, who delivered solid performances for France in their recent Nations League matches, is expected to be fit for the national team’s highly anticipated clash against Spain on June 5.
