Malian midfielder Mahamadou Doumbia has attracted interest from top European clubs following his impressive performances for Royal Antwerp in the Belgian Pro League.

With Juventus, Sevilla, Everton, Brighton, and Olympique de Marseille among the suitors, the 20-year-old faces a crucial decision regarding his next career move.

Former Malian international Adama Tamboura advised the young talent to carefully consider his options before making any move.

Tamboura, who was named the best left-back at the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, emphasized the importance of mental readiness, particularly when transitioning to a new league.

Continuing development at Antwerp

Doumbia is currently in his second season with Royal Antwerp, where he has scored three goals in 24 appearances across all competitions.

His performances have earned him comparisons to former Ivory Coast international Yaya Touré, as he continues to establish himself as one of the top midfielders in Belgium.

Tamboura believes staying at Antwerp could be a beneficial option, allowing Doumbia to further develop before taking on a new challenge.

“I think he’s a very promising player who’s having a great season with Antwerp, but he definitely shouldn’t rush into anything. He needs to prepare himself mentally before making any decision. It’s also clear that things move very quickly in the world of football these days. It’s up to him to decide whether he wants to stay or whether he has the ability to explore something else,” Tamboura said.

A move to Ligue 1 with Marseille?

French clubs, including Olympique de Marseille and Stade Brestois, have already shown interest in Doumbia.

His physical and technical abilities make him an attractive prospect for Marseille, a club looking to strengthen its midfield ahead of next season.

However, Antwerp has reportedly set his release clause at €15 million, meaning any potential move would require a significant financial commitment.

Tamboura acknowledged that Ligue 1 could be a viable destination but cautioned that Marseille might not be an easy environment for a young player.

“Olympique de Marseille isn’t a bad destination for Mahamadou Doumbia, but it depends… He shouldn’t sign there and expect to be trusted early on, because this club isn’t the same as it used to be. But if he knows he’s ready to fight and has a strong mentality, why not?” he stated.

Premier League or La Liga?

Beyond France, clubs from England and Spain are also keeping a close eye on the young midfielder.

Everton, Brighton, and Crystal Palace are reportedly interested, while Juventus and Sevilla have also been linked.

Tamboura, however, believes that English football would be the best fit for Doumbia’s playing style.

“I think his profile is more suited to English football, which isn’t overly tactical, unlike Spain. Several Malian players have already made their mark in England, as we play almost the same football. In the Premier League, he’ll certainly be able to adapt very quickly, but he’ll have to be ready physically and mentally. It’s a different challenge and a different level. He needs to keep working hard to make his mark,” he added.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Doumbia will have to assess his options carefully.

Whether he remains at Antwerp or moves to a top European league, his next step could define his career trajectory.
