Morocco coach Walid Regragui acknowledged his players’ poor performance despite their win against Niger in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
The Atlas Lions came from behind to record a 2-1 win against the Nigeriens on Friday to take control of their group.
“We wasted an entire round against Niger, and then we received a big slap from the opponent. The first goal moved us and woke us up. Once again, I admit that we played a round that was beyond the expectations of the Moroccan fans, and this is unfortunate,” he said after the game.
“I have a great bench and this is a lesson to anyone who takes it lightly that they will lose their place. The Oujda fans supported us, and perhaps if we had been in another city, we would not have received the same support. I congratulate Moroccans on this victory. What happened is a great lesson that should be learned.”
Morocco, who has now amassed 12 points after five games will take on third-place Tanzania on Tuesday.
