Vladimir Petković to address media ahead of crucial World Cup qualifiers

Vladimir Petkovic, the Bosnian tactician steering the Algerian national team, hailed his squad’s resilience after they clinched a crucial 3-1 win over Botswana on Friday in the fifth round of World Cup qualifiers.

The victory, powered by Amine Gouiri’s strike and a brace from Mohamed El Amine Amoura, kept the Desert Warriors firmly in contention for a World Cup spot.

Petkovic said in the press conference after the end of the match: “The beginning of the match was difficult for us; due to the poor condition of the field, the intense heat and the high humidity.”

“The Botswana team was strong and presented us with many difficulties, but with time we learned how to control the match and succeeded in achieving victory, and I believe that the most important thing has been achieved,” he added.

“I thank my players for the effort made throughout the 90 minutes. They were exemplary on the field and defied all odds to return with a full complement and make the Algerian people happy.”

The 61-year-old didn’t hold back in slamming the Confederation of African Football’s Competitions Committee for scheduling the noon kickoff, a stark contrast to other Arab teams’ timings. He added, “Frankly, it was not easy for the players to play in such difficult weather conditions, while they were fasting during Ramadan.”

“Our main goal is to qualify for the World Cup. We know the size of the challenges that await us, and we will play every match like a final.”

Algeria now lead Group G with 12 points, while Botswana languish in fourth with six.
