Sudan faces key defensive setback ahead of Senegal clash

Group B leaders Sudan will be without a crucial defensive figure when they take on Senegal in a pivotal 2026 World Cup qualifier on March 22 in Libya.

Central defender Mustafa Karshom, a cornerstone of Sudan’s backline, has been ruled out, leaving coach Kwesi Appiah with a significant selection dilemma.

Sudan currently tops the group with 10 points, making the encounter with Senegal a crucial test of their credentials.

Defensive options for Sudan

Appiah now faces the challenge of filling Karshom’s void, with three potential candidates in contention.

Mohamed Ahmed Arnaq of Al-Hilal is seen as the most natural replacement, having previously demonstrated his defensive solidity.

Tayeb Abdelrazak, who has seen limited starting opportunities, and Al-Merrikh captain Amir Kamal also present viable alternatives.

Whichever option Appiah chooses, Karshom’s absence is a significant blow.

Facing a formidable Senegalese attack, Sudan’s defense will need to be at its best to maintain their position at the top of the group.
