Morocco defender Nayef Aguerd is expected to undergo a medical with Real Sociedad as he closes in on a return to the Spanish club from French side Olympique de Marseille.

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, Aguerd’s medical is scheduled for today after Marseille and Real Sociedad reached an agreement in principle over a loan deal that includes an option to buy.

The move would see the 30-year-old return to La Liga after a successful loan spell with Real Sociedad during the 2025-26 season.

Aguerd impressed during previous Sociedad spell

Aguerd spent last season on loan at Real Sociedad, where he quickly became an important part of the club’s defence.

His performances convinced the Spanish side to pursue a permanent return, with Sociedad reportedly securing the Moroccan’s initial approval before negotiations with Marseille gathered pace.

Aguerd joined Marseille from West Ham United last summer in a deal reportedly worth €23m. However, Marseille are now understood to be reshaping their squad and reducing their wage bill following an active transfer window.

Al Sadd interest fails to materialise

Real Sociedad were not the only club interested in the Morocco international.

Qatari club Al Sadd had previously been linked with a move for Aguerd, including a proposed loan arrangement with an automatic purchase clause. However, the deal did not materialise, leaving Real Sociedad in a strong position to bring the defender back to Spain.

For Aguerd, a return to San Sebastián would offer the chance to continue his career at a club where he already established himself as a key defensive figure.

Morocco defender back to full fitness

The proposed transfer also represents another step forward for Aguerd after his recent injury setback.

The defender has returned to full fitness following a groin injury that ruled him out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He has since resumed training ahead of the new campaign.

Neither Marseille nor Real Sociedad has officially commented on the reported transfer.

However, with the medical expected to take place today, Aguerd’s departure from Marseille appears to be moving closer, with the Morocco international poised to begin another chapter of his career in La Liga.
