Yves Bissouma’s AFCON commitment hampers potential move to Marseille

Yves Bissouma’s AFCON commitment hampers potential move to Marseille

Marseille’s long-standing interest in Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma appears unlikely to materialise, with the club reportedly reluctant to pursue the Malian international due to his expected participation in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

AFCON a major obstacle for Marseille

Bissouma, who is widely expected to leave Tottenham at the end of the season, had been identified as a potential midfield reinforcement for OM.

However, the club’s management is concerned about the timing of the next AFCON, scheduled to take place in Morocco between December 2025 and January 2026.

With several of Marseille’s key players already expected to be called up for the tournament, signing another African international would further deplete the squad during a critical period in the season.

Given that OM are aiming to compete in the Champions League next year, maintaining squad depth is a top priority for the club’s leadership.

Marseille’s transfer strategy prioritises availability

Marseille’s reluctance to move forward with the Bissouma deal reflects a broader transfer policy aimed at minimising disruptions caused by international tournaments.

The club is reportedly focusing on recruiting players who will be available throughout the season, particularly during the winter months when AFCON could significantly impact team selection.

This strategic approach stems from past experiences, where the absence of key African internationals during AFCON has posed challenges for Ligue 1 clubs.

Rather than risking a mid-season shortage of midfield options, OM are said to be exploring alternatives that would ensure continuity in both domestic and European competitions.

Bissouma’s future at Tottenham uncertain

While Marseille may be stepping away from a potential deal, Bissouma is still expected to be on the move this summer.

The 27-year-old, who joined Spurs from Brighton in 2022, has struggled for consistency in North London.

Despite flashes of brilliance, injuries and competition for places have limited his impact under Ange Postecoglou.

With Tottenham likely to reshape their squad ahead of the 2025/26 season, Bissouma could be made available for transfer, attracting interest from other European clubs willing to accommodate his AFCON commitments.

OM’s midfield plans moving forward

As Marseille continue their search for midfield reinforcements, the club will likely prioritise players who can offer stability throughout the season.

With Champions League football a key objective, OM’s management is focused on assembling a squad that can withstand the demands of both domestic and European competition without being weakened by major international tournaments.

While Bissouma remains a highly talented midfielder, his participation in AFCON appears to be the decisive factor preventing his move to Marseille.
