Nigerian football stakeholder Adewale Ajayi has praised Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle for his merit-based selection of players in the recently announced 39-man squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Ajayi, the convener of the NSM/NSC Reloaded group — a collective of Nigerian sports stakeholders — commended Chelle for prioritising active players in his squad announcement on Monday.
“Well done Chelle, for the first time in a long time, a Super Eagles list has been released based solely on merit,” Ajayi said. “All the invited players play for their clubs.
Some may be regulars, but they all play for their clubs every weekend, and I am happy to say that. Chelle has started on a good note.”
Ajayi expressed support for Chelle’s decision to name an expanded squad, emphasising the coach’s need to build rapport with the players and outline his vision.
“The decision to invite so many players is a very good one. He (Chelle) is new to this role and will need these games to connect with the players, explain his plans and build a good relationship for the future.”
He acknowledged that not all 39 players would make the final squad but believed the final 23 would have earned their spots based on merit.
Ajayi also welcomed the return of goalkeeper Adebayo Adeleye, who had been previously overlooked, saying: “It is good to see Adebayo Adeleye on the list.
I hope he has learned from his past experiences.”
Regarding the inclusions of Kelechi Iheanacho and Samuel Chukwueze, Ajayi noted that while their recent form had been underwhelming, their performances over the weekend justified their call-ups.
The announcement marks a shift from past Super Eagles squad selections, which had often been criticised for including players lacking regular club football.
Chelle’s list signals a renewed focus on merit and consistent performances as Nigeria prepares for crucial World Cup qualifiers.
