Zimbabwe coach Michael Nees has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to defeat Nigeria’s Super Eagles in their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifier in Uyo.

The two sides will meet on the sixth matchday of Group C qualifiers, with Nigeria hosting Zimbabwe. Their previous encounter in November 2023 ended in a 1-1 draw in Kigali, where Kelechi Iheanacho equalised for the Super Eagles.

After four matches, Nigeria, runners-up of the 2023 AFCON, sit fifth in the group with three points, while Zimbabwe occupy last place with two points.

The Super Eagles have drawn both of their home games, 1-1 against Lesotho and 1-1 against South Africa.

Speaking on Brila FM ahead of the match, Nees acknowledged Nigeria’s quality but believes his side can capitalise on the Super Eagles’ inconsistent home form.

“Everyone knows that Nigeria are better than where they are and our situations are similar,” the 57-year-old German coach said.

“For Nigeria to turn things around, they have to play well, but I think they are winnable in Uyo.”

Nigeria have never lost to Zimbabwe in their last seven encounters, registering four wins and three draws.

The Super Eagles’ only defeat to Zimbabwe came in a 2-0 friendly loss in 1981.

Zimbabwe will aim to upset the odds as they seek to revive their qualification hopes, while Nigeria will look to improve their position in the group standings.
