Ghana president demands transparency in football operations

Blackstars

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has called for greater transparency in the management of football finances following the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON.

The president made the statement during a national address on Thursday, February 27, 2025.

His remarks come in the wake of mounting public criticism over the team’s recent performances and the handling of resources allocated to national teams.

According to a statement issued by the Ghana Football Association (GFA), President Mahama expressed disappointment at the Black Stars’ absence from the upcoming continental tournament.

He urged for openness in the budgeting and expenditure processes concerning the senior national team and all other national teams.

The GFA, in response, clarified that it is not directly responsible for managing the finances of football activities but pledged its full support for the president’s call for transparency.

The statement read: “The President’s call for the Department to deal with these matters transparently with the public is one we fully endorse, and we will happily support the Department of Sport and Recreation in achieving this objective.”

The call for transparency has been widely welcomed by football stakeholders and the public, who have long sought greater accountability in the administration of the sport.

The Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the continental tournament has heightened scrutiny on the governance of football in Ghana, prompting demands for reforms in financial management and resource allocation.

With pressure mounting, the GFA has reiterated its commitment to collaborating with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to ensure that the management of football funds is conducted in an open and accountable manner.

The developments mark a pivotal moment for Ghanaian football as the nation seeks to restore confidence in its football administration.
