Premier League outfit Newcastle United are considering signing Nigerian international Ademola Lookman ahead of the summer transfer window.
Lookman is said to be considering his future following recent fallout with head coach Gian Piero Gasperini. The reigning African Footballer of the Year was heavily criticized by his coach after missing a penalty in Atalanta’s home defeat to Club Brugge in the Champions League playoffs.
Despite Gasperini claiming his comment has no malicious intent, Lookman is said to be ready for Atalanta departure in the summer.
Lookman bounced back from the saga by bagging an impressive brace against Empoli on Sunday, taking his tally for Atalanta to 49 goals in 107 matches.
Per reports in the UK media, Newcastle United could make a move for Lookman as they seeks to strengthen their attack in summer.
The Magpies faces a stiffer competition from Manchester United, who are also said to be interested in Lookman.
He was nominated for the Ballon d’Or on the back of his impressive 2023/24 campaign. Meanwhile, Lookman emerged as the African Footballer of the Year in 2024.
The 22-year-old joined Atalanta in 2022 and has since established himself as a key cog to the team, racking up crucial goals including a hat-trick that won the Europa League title for the Italian club last season.
This season, Lookman has scored 15 goals and provided 7 assists in 28 matches across all competitions.
