Former Super Eagles captain Jay-Jay Okocha has criticised Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini for his scathing remarks about Ademola Lookman following the Nigerian forward’s penalty miss in Atalanta’s 3-1 defeat to Club Brugge.
Lookman, who failed to convert a crucial spot-kick in the UEFA Europa League clash, was publicly criticised by Gasperini, who labeled him the “worst penalty taker” he had ever coached.
The comment sparked controversy, with Lookman himself expressing disappointment over the manager’s words, calling them “disrespectful.” Gasperini later attempted to clarify his statement, insisting he had no intention of offending the 27-year-old forward.
Okocha defends Lookman
Okocha, widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest footballers, was quick to defend Lookman, arguing that the criticism was both excessive and unjustified.
I think Gasperini overreacted by calling Lookman the worst penalty taker,” Okocha told Mozzart Sport. “Many top players have missed important penalties without facing such harsh words from their manager.
The former Nigerian international pointed out that Lookman has been one of Atalanta’s most influential players in recent seasons, contributing significantly to their attacking play.
If you take Lookman out of Atalanta, the club could struggle and even risk relegation,” Okocha added, highlighting the forward’s importance to the team.
Lookman’s crucial role at Atalanta
Since joining Atalanta, Lookman has been instrumental in their attacking success, frequently delivering key goals and assists.
His performances have made him one of the club’s standout players, earning praise from fans and pundits alike.
Despite his missed penalty, the Nigerian forward remains a key figure for Atalanta as they continue their push for European qualification.
With tensions between player and manager now under the spotlight, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold in the coming weeks.
