Former Mali international Samba Diawara has been named as the permanent manager of French Ligue 1 outfit Stade Reims.
This appointment marks a significant milestone for Diawara, who is keen to attain greater heights of his coaching career.
Diawara replaced Slovenian tactician Luka Elsner as an interim manager in early February after a string of unimpressive results. The club endured a torrid time under Elsner, playing several games without a win since November 24, 2024.
The 46-year-old Malian trainer led the club in three matches as an interim manager, winning just one on penalties against amateur side Bourgoin-Jallieu in the Coupe de France, followed heavy defeat to Lyon and a narrow loss to Angers.
Despite not impressing, Reims have announced the permanent appointment of the former Mali star and is expected to steer affairs until the end of the season.
Commenting on Diawara’s appointment, General Manager Mathieu Lacour said, “This is neither an interim nor a temporary choice until the end of the season: Samba is the coach of the professional team, with a long-term vision for the role and our collaboration.”
Diawara faces a daunting task as Reims battle against relegation in the ongoing French Ligue 1 campaign. Reims are into the quarter-finals of the Cup competition, but sit only four points above the relegation playoff spot with 12 games remaining.
