Liverpool are reportedly considering a move for Nigeria international Ademola Lookman, who currently plays for Italian side Atalanta.
Lookman, 27, previously had a stint in the Premier League with Everton between 2017 and 2019 but struggled to make a significant impact.
During his time at Goodison Park, the winger managed just four goals and two assists in 48 appearances. A subsequent spell at RB Leipzig also failed to yield success, but he has since rediscovered his form at Atalanta.
Since joining the Serie A club, Lookman has been in exceptional form, netting 47 goals and providing 23 assists in 106 matches across all competitions.
His performances earned him Atalanta’s Player of the Season award for both the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns. He also played a crucial role in the club’s Europa League triumph last season.
This season, Lookman has continued to impress, registering 15 goals and seven assists in 28 appearances. However, his relationship with Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has recently come under strain.
Following Lookman’s missed penalty in a Champions League clash against Club Brugge, Gasperini publicly criticized him, calling him “one of the worst penalty takers” he had ever seen.
Lookman responded via Instagram, expressing his disappointment over the comments. He stated that being singled out in such a manner felt “deeply disrespectful” despite his commitment to the club.
He also revealed that he had faced many challenges during his time at Atalanta, most of which he had kept private.
The forward explained that he took the penalty after being instructed to do so by the designated taker and emphasized his dedication to overcoming setbacks.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, this fallout between Lookman and Gasperini has caught Liverpool’s attention, with the Premier League side now weighing up a potential move for the former Everton winger.
