The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has confirmed the permanent appointment of Kalisto Pasuwa as the head coach of the national team on a two-year contract.
The Zimbabwean tactician, who previously coached Nyasa Big Bullets for over six years, now faces the challenge of guiding the Flames to future success.
Pasuwa initially took charge of the team on an interim basis in November 2024, following the dismissal of Patrick Mabedi.
His brief tenure saw Malawi earn a goalless draw against Burundi before securing an impressive 3-0 victory over Burkina Faso in their final Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.
Despite finishing at the bottom of Group L, his impact convinced FAM to entrust him with the job permanently.
Announcing the decision, FAM president Fleetwood Haiya expressed confidence in Pasuwa’s abilities.
“We all know what Pasuwa has achieved (locally and internationally), and it cannot be disputed that he has been one of the best performers in our football,” Haiya said.
“He is now a full-time coach, and we will give him all the support for him to help us achieve our ambitions. His number-one target is to take us to 2027 AFCON.
With AFCON 2027 qualification set as a priority, Pasuwa is determined to instill a winning mentality within the squad.
The 54-year-old is no stranger to the demands of international football, having previously led Zimbabwe to AFCON in 2017.
“I am filled with a sense of pride, passion and responsibility,” Pasuwa said.
“I am committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure that our team represents our national dignity, pride, dedication, and success.
“My coaching philosophy is built on principles of teamwork, discipline, and hard work. I believe that by working together we can achieve greatness. My goal is to create a strong team and culture that is built on trust, respect, and communication.
“I have been here for some years, and I know the culture and I know what Malawian players need and that gives me an advantage.
“I have been in these shoes before with Zimbabwe and we qualified to AFCON in 2017, and it is my hope that if we work together, we can achieve the target of going to 2027 AFCON.”
Pasuwa’s wealth of experience, deep understanding of Malawian football, and proven track record make him a solid choice for the role.
