Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta optimistic about Thomas Partey's injury progress

Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey featured for Arsenal on Wednesday night, but the Gunners failed to overturn their first-leg deficit, suffering a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United at St. James’ Park in the EFL Cup semi-final.

Partey started in midfield, just as he did in the first leg at the Emirates, but Arsenal struggled to impose themselves. A lacklustre performance from Mikel Arteta’s side saw Newcastle take control early, with Jacob Murphy breaking the deadlock in the 19th minute after Alexander Isak had a goal disallowed.

The Magpies extended their lead in the 52nd minute when Anthony Gordon capitalized on a defensive blunder by goalkeeper David Raya, sealing a comfortable victory for the hosts. Arsenal failed to mount a comeback, ultimately bowing out with a 4-0 aggregate defeat.

With Newcastle booking their place in the final, there was no celebration for Partey and Arsenal, whose EFL Cup journey ended in disappointment.
