Algerian international Sofiane Feghouli, who has been without a club since departing Fatih Karagümrük in June 2024, is reportedly considering a move back to La Liga for one final challenge.
At 35, the former Valencia attacking midfielder, known for his 83 international caps and 19 goals, could be heading back to the Spanish league where he enjoyed significant success during his earlier career.
Las Palmas Interest Grows
Feghouli’s next destination may be Las Palmas, according to reports from AS. The Canary Islands-based club is said to be eyeing the experienced midfielder as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the closing of the winter transfer window on February 3.
The key attraction for Las Palmas is Feghouli’s free-agent status, meaning they would incur no transfer fee for his services, while gaining a player with a wealth of top-level experience.
The former Valencia star, who spent six seasons with the Spanish club between 2010 and 2016, remains a familiar face in Spanish football.
While he may no longer possess the youthful energy of his 20s, his vast experience in top-flight football, including three Champions League appearances, could prove invaluable to a Las Palmas side currently struggling to find stability in the mid-table of La Liga.
Prepared for One Last Challenge
Since leaving Turkey, Feghouli has been staying in shape, training individually in Qatar, suggesting that he is eager for one final opportunity at a competitive level.
Despite receiving offers, notably from the Turkish second division, Feghouli has remained focused on finding a more stimulating project, one that could potentially come in the form of a return to Spain.
Last year, he was on the verge of joining Zamalek in Africa, but the deal ultimately fell through.
Now, the Algerian midfielder could be on the verge of securing a place in La Liga with Las Palmas, providing him with a new challenge in the twilight years of his playing career.
A Final Africa Cup of Nations?
Feghouli has not been called up to the Algerian national team since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and while he may be a seasoned veteran, it remains unclear whether he will be recalled to the squad under current coach Vladimir Petković.
Nevertheless, Feghouli’s longstanding influence on Algerian football, from his debut in 2012 to his participation in four AFCON tournaments and a World Cup, positions him as a key figure in the national team’s history.
Although the new generation of players has emerged, Feghouli’s experience and leadership would still make him a valuable presence in the dressing room should he return to action.
Whether or not Petković calls him up again remains to be seen, but his status as a fixture of Algerian football is undeniable.
As Feghouli looks for a new club and potential international future, the football world will be watching closely.
