Ghana FA retains Otto Addo as Black Stars coach despite AFCON failure

Ghana Head Coach Otto Addo

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has decided to retain Otto Addo as the head coach of the Black Stars, despite the team’s recent struggles, including failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 21 years.

Ghana’s disappointing AFCON campaign saw them finish bottom of their group without securing a single win.

Despite these setbacks, the GFA has opted for continuity, according to Black Stars management committee chairman Randy Abbey.

“I think the GFA has taken the decision already,” Abbey confirmed in an interview on Original FM. “The GFA is keeping Otto Addo. Immediately, it’s about the World Cup qualifiers that start in March.”

Reports suggest the GFA will replace assistant coaches Joseph Laumann and John Paintsil but is banking on Addo’s leadership to provide stability during a crucial period.

The Black Stars have pivotal World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar in March, with hopes of returning to winning ways under Addo’s guidance.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars management committee was reconstituted over the weekend, with Randy Abbey named chairman and Stephen Appiah appointed as vice chairman, marking a renewed push for progress.
