‘Kids were brainwashed to disrespect my captaincy’ – Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has opened up about the challenges he faced as leader of the Black Stars, accusing certain individuals of undermining his authority.

Speaking during an Instagram Live session, Gyan revealed how divisions within the national team affected his tenure and tarnished his legacy.

“In my time as a captain in the national team, I was alone. I only delivered on the field,” Gyan said.

“The kids would come into the team, they are all excited to see me. Then three days later, they would be avoiding me all because they have been brainwashed.”

The former striker suggested that certain figures within the camp sowed seeds of discord, causing younger players to disrespect him.

“People brainwashed the kids against me so they didn’t respect me. After my departure, you can see the effect. Go back and look at the kids who were brainwashed—where are they now?”

Gyan also addressed the controversy surrounding his captaincy, particularly criticism over his decision to place his image on the captain’s armband.

“Instead of celebrating my 50th goal, you were fixated on my face on the captain’s armband,” he lamented.

His comments highlight lingering issues of division within the Black Stars, where alleged internal camps have long been a source of friction.

Gyan, Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals, captained the team from 2012 to 2019, a period marked by both successes and controversies.
