Former Ghana assistant coach George Boateng recounts experience after 2022 World Cup qualification

George Boateng

Former Ghana assistant coach George Boateng has shared his memories of playing a key role in the country’s qualification for the 2022 World Cup.

Following a disappointing showing at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, the Black Stars faced their fierce rivals, Nigeria, in the World Cup playoffs.

The first leg at Baba Yara Stadium ended in a 0-0 draw, while the return leg at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja also finished 1-1. Ghana secured their World Cup spot on the away goals rule.

Reflecting on the experience, Boateng, who worked alongside head coach Otto Addo, second assistant coach Didi Dramani, and technical advisor Chris Hughton, said, “We qualified for the World Cup 2022 in Qatar, it was unbelievable for me as a coach to be in the World Cup,” he told Tribal Football.

“I really enjoyed that experience and it made me realize why people speak so highly about tournaments like the World Cup,” he added.

At the tournament, Ghana won one match against South Korea but suffered defeats to Portugal and Uruguay.
