German-Ghanaian defender Derrick Kohn delivered a standout performance, providing two assists in Werder Bremen’s commanding 4-1 victory over Union Berlin at Weserstadion on Saturday afternoon.
The hosts started strong, breaking the deadlock in the 13th minute when Marco Grüll nodded home a pinpoint cross from Romano Schmid. Grüll doubled his tally just four minutes later, rifling a superb strike past Frederik Rønnow after a delightful pass from Kohn.
Union Berlin briefly rallied through András Schäfer’s close-range effort in the 23rd minute, assisted by Tom Rothe, but Werder remained relentless. Moments before halftime, Mitchell Weiser restored Bremen’s two-goal cushion, slotting in Kohn’s second assist of the day with clinical precision.
The second half saw Union struggling to break down a well-organized Bremen defense, marshaled expertly by Kohn. Jens Stage sealed the victory in the 87th minute, converting from close range after Marvin Ducksch’s clever setup.
With this victory, Werder Bremen improved their head-to-head record to three wins against Union Berlin. They now look ahead to a challenging encounter with RB Leipzig on January 12th.
