Moctar Bouzouma’s suspension shakes Mauritanian football

In a dramatic turn of events, Moctar Bouzouma, newly appointed sports director of Chemal FC, has been handed a one-year suspension from all football-related activities by the disciplinary committee of the Football Federation of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania (FFRIM).

The verdict, delivered on Saturday, December 7, includes a fine of approximately €290.

The penalty follows an unsettling incident during the Super D1 clash between Chemal FC and FC Nouadhibou. After Chemal’s 2-0 defeat, Bouzouma stormed the pitch and confronted referee Abdel Aziz Bouh in a heated exchange that escalated into an attempted assault. Although no physical harm was reported, the disciplinary body deemed the act unacceptable, tarnishing Bouzouma’s previously lauded reputation.

Ironically, Bouzouma’s appointment as Chemal’s sports director earlier this season was seen as a strategic move to leverage his past experience with FC Tevragh-Zeina and Mauritania’s beach soccer team. Now, his behavior casts a shadow over his career and raises questions about Chemal FC’s judgment in hiring him.

The suspension leaves a stain not only on Bouzouma’s image but also on Mauritanian football’s ongoing fight for professionalism.
