Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie has declared the team’s intention to reclaim their dominance at the 2024 Africa Women Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Despite being the tournament’s most successful side with nine titles, the Nigerian squad endured a disappointing fourth-place finish in the 2022 edition held in Morocco.
The Falcons, led by coach Justine Madugu, recently concluded their year with a narrow 2-1 defeat to France in a friendly match.
Reflecting on the team’s goals for the upcoming year, Nnadozie emphasized their determination to bring the WAFCON trophy back to Nigeria.
Speaking to Ojb Sports, Nnadozie said, “This is the last game of the year, but next year we will continue where we left off.
The target is to win WAFCON, and by the grace of God, we will do it.
Beyond immediate ambitions, Nnadozie also shared her optimism about the future of Nigerian women’s football, highlighting the team’s youthful potential and steady progress.
I always say we have a bright future.
It hasn’t been the same in the last four to five years, but we are still improving.
We have a lot of young talent, and I think in the next 20 to 30 years we will have no shortage of good footballers, she added.
The Super Falcons have long been a powerhouse in African women’s football, but recent years have seen increased competition from other nations.
Their performance at the 2022 WAFCON marked one of their less dominant showings, as they missed out on a podium finish for the first time since 2012.
The Nigerian team will now look to regroup and refine their strategies ahead of the 2024 tournament, where they aim to reinforce their legacy as the continent’s leading side.
With a mix of experienced players like Nnadozie and emerging young talent, the Falcons are poised to make a strong statement in their bid for a 10th WAFCON title.
As they prepare for the road ahead, the Super Falcons will seek to capitalize on their blend of history, resilience, and new energy to reclaim their top position in African football.
