The 2025 Club World Cup draw has placed Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in a challenging Group G, alongside Manchester City, Juventus, and Al Ain. In an exclusive interview, Moroccan sports coach Aïssaoui El Mehdi shares his insights into Wydad’s chances in the prestigious tournament.
Group G, according to El Mehdi, is undeniably one of the most competitive in the competition.
With two European heavyweights, Manchester City and Juventus, as the clear favorites, Wydad faces an uphill battle.
Additionally, Al Ain, the champions of the United Arab Emirates, should not be underestimated, as their experience in the tournament adds further complexity to the group.
Despite these formidable opponents, El Mehdi remains optimistic, viewing the challenge as an opportunity for Wydad to make their mark.
“It’s a tough group, but it’s not insurmountable,” says El Mehdi. “Manchester City and Juventus are two of the top teams globally, and Al Ain is always competitive.
However, Wydad has the potential to rise to the occasion and showcase their strength on the world stage.”
While Wydad Casablanca has not had the best start to the current season in the domestic league, El Mehdi points to several encouraging signs within the team.
With the recent appointment of South African coach Rulani Mokwena, the club is undergoing a rebuilding phase.
Mokwena’s arrival is expected to bring fresh tactical approaches and a boost in morale for the squad.
“The team is in a transition phase, but they are actively working to improve,” El Mehdi explains.
“Under Mokwena, there’s a clear focus on strengthening the squad and improving performance both on the domestic front and in international competitions like the Club World Cup.”
El Mehdi highlights that the focus on building a strong, cohesive team will be crucial as Wydad heads into the tournament.
Though the group is challenging, he believes that with determination and the right mindset, the Moroccan club can compete with the best in the world.
As the tournament approaches, Wydad Casablanca’s supporters will be hoping that their team can rise to the occasion and perform well in what is undoubtedly a tough group.
If they can capitalize on their strengths and continue to develop under Mokwena, Wydad could prove to be a formidable opponent on the world stage.
