Kaizer Chiefs defender Reeve Frosler says the club are determined to win the Carling Knockout Cup after seeing their chances of lifting the MTN8 and CAF Confederation Cup disappear this season.
Kaizer Chiefs begin their Carling Knockout Cup campaign against TS Galaxy on Tuesday, with the match offering their next opportunity to challenge for silverware.
The Glamour Boys have only three competitions remaining in their campaign. Alongside the Carling Knockout Cup, they are still competing in the Betway Premiership and the Nedbank Cup.
Frosler acknowledged the importance of avoiding another early cup exit, while also recognising the threat posed by TS Galaxy.
“TS Galaxy have been a tough opponent for us in the last few games, but it’s a cup competition and cup games are always different,” he told the club’s official website.
“We’ll look to put our best foot forward on Tuesday and try and go all the way in the Carling Cup. We have ambitions of wanting to win a trophy, and this gives us an opportunity to try and do that.”
Kaizer Chiefs will face TS Galaxy before turning their attention to a highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates at the weekend.
Despite the importance of that fixture, Frosler says the immediate priority is Tuesday’s encounter with the Rockets.
“Obviously, we’ve got the (Soweto) Derby coming up on the weekend as well, but our attention is on TS Galaxy now, and we will use the game as preparation for Saturday,” he said.
The defender’s comments underline Kaizer Chiefs’ need to make the most of their remaining cup opportunities after their departures from the MTN8 and CAF Confederation Cup reduced the number of competitions in which they can still pursue a trophy.
The Carling Knockout Cup now represents their next chance to make progress towards silverware, with Frosler insisting the squad’s focus is firmly on the opening tie rather than the derby that follows.
