Tanguy Coulibaly has been handed a two-match suspension, with an additional suspended sentence, for his actions during the final moments of Montpellier’s 2-2 draw against Lille on Sunday. The incident occurred in stoppage time when Coulibaly, in a heated moment of the match, cleared the ball in the direction of Lille manager Bruno Genesio, who had instinctively begun to chase him.
The clash escalated after the ball struck Genesio, leading to a brief confrontation between players.
The Montpellier player was shown a red card for his role in the incident, which was deemed an act of unsporting behavior.
In addition to Coulibaly’s suspension, Lille’s Mitchel Bakker also received a one-match suspension for his involvement in the altercation, which followed the clearance incident.
Bakker had been sent off for his part in the ensuing scuffle, which added to the drama of the final moments of the match.
Jean-Louis Gasset, the Montpellier head coach, was also sanctioned for his actions during the incident. Gasset, visibly frustrated, lost his temper in the aftermath and was handed a similar sanction to Bakker’s.
He will serve a one-match suspension, with the additional stipulation that the suspension is not enforced unless he faces further disciplinary issues.
The LFP disciplinary committee convened on Wednesday evening and delivered the verdict, which reflects their stance on maintaining discipline and sportsmanship in the league.
The sanctions for both Coulibaly and Gasset aim to send a message about the importance of maintaining composure, particularly in high-stress moments during matches.
These decisions highlight the increasing focus on player and coach conduct, with the disciplinary committee continuing to take a firm stance against any behavior that undermines the integrity of the game.
