Lookman and Guirassy lead the charge for 2024 African Ballon d’Or

NOUVEAU POUR SITE 2024 11 06T153612

The race for the 2024 African Ballon d’Or is heating up, with two standout players emerging as the frontrunners in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive contest. In the absence of notable names such as Victor Osimhen, Sadio Mané, and Riyad Mahrez, the spotlight has shifted to Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman and Guinean striker Serhou Guirassy, both of whom are expected to battle it out for the prestigious award.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently revealed the 10 players shortlisted for the 2024 African Ballon d’Or, a list that features a mix of established stars and emerging talents.

While the absence of the previous winner, Osimhen, as well as other high-profile African footballers, has led to speculation, Lookman and Guirassy have captured the attention of fans and pundits alike with their exceptional performances over the past year.

Ademola Lookman, who helped Nigeria reach the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), has been in sensational form, particularly in the Europa League, where he scored a hat-trick in the final for Atalanta Bergamo.

His 15 goals in 2024 and consistency at both club and international levels have positioned him as the front-runner for this year’s award.

With a standout AFCON campaign and a remarkable club season, Lookman has emerged as the favorite to succeed Osimhen as the continent’s top player.

On the other hand, Serhou Guirassy has been equally impressive, netting 19 goals in 2024, making him one of the most prolific African strikers in Europe.

His speed, sharp finishing, and excellent performances for both club and country have made him a serious contender for the award.

Despite being overlooked for a place in the World Ballon d’Or nominees, Guirassy’s performances have made him one of the most talked-about players of the year, with many believing he could challenge for the title.

The list of 10 players nominated for the award includes other notable figures, such as Amine Gouiri from Algeria, whose recent form has been under scrutiny, and William Troost-Ekong, whose defensive solidity helped Nigeria in their AFCON campaign.

Other candidates like Chancel Mbemba, Achraf Hakimi, and Edmond Tapsoba have had strong individual seasons but face tougher competition in a year marked by standout performances from Lookman and Guirassy.

The competition for the 2024 African Ballon d’Or is wide open, but with their goal-scoring exploits and consistent form, Lookman and Guirassy are undoubtedly the two names to watch.

The outcome of this year’s award promises to be an exciting and closely contested battle between two of Africa’s brightest talents.
