Rajab Bakkar announces retirement from football after career spanning nearly 300 matches
Former Pyramids FC player Rajab Bakkar has officially announced his retirement from professional football, ending a career that saw him feature in nearly 300 matches across various competitions.
Bakkar, who was known for his versatility as a right-back and central defender, shared the news on his personal Facebook account, marking the end of his journey in the sport.
“After participating in almost 300 matches in the league, cup, and African competitions, and representing numerous clubs including Maghagha, Al-Aluminum, Enppi, Al-Dakhiliya, Smouha, Pyramids, Ceramica, the Tala’ea El Gaish, and the Egyptian national team under captain Hossam El-Badry, today I announce my official retirement from football,” Bakkar wrote.
A Career Marked by Versatility and Resilience
Throughout his career, Rajab Bakkar earned a reputation for his solid defensive skills and adaptability on the field.
He played for several top-tier Egyptian clubs, including Pyramids FC, where he enjoyed significant stints that bolstered his reputation as a reliable defender.
Bakkar’s career also saw him don the jerseys of teams like Enppi, Smouha, and Al-Dakhiliya, where he contributed to both domestic league campaigns and continental tournaments.
Bakkar was even called up to the Egyptian national team, where he had the opportunity to play under coach Hossam El-Badry.
Although his international appearances were limited, his inclusion in the national squad was a testament to his consistent performances at the club level.
Failed Moves to Zamalek and the Reason Behind It
One of the most recurring themes throughout Bakkar’s career was the prospect of joining Zamalek, one of Egypt’s most prestigious clubs. Despite numerous attempts over the years, a transfer to the White Knights never materialized.
Bakkar’s name was repeatedly linked with a potential move to bolster Zamalek’s right-back position, but negotiations with his then-current clubs fell through each time, preventing the switch.
Sources close to the situation suggested that agreements between Zamalek and Bakkar’s previous teams failed to materialize due to various issues, including fluctuating negotiations and contractual disagreements.
Consequently, despite multiple opportunities, Bakkar was never able to don the iconic white shirt of Zamalek.
An End of an Era
Rajab Bakkar’s decision to retire brings an end to a career that spanned over a decade, marked by resilience, versatility, and a dedication to the game.
Although his time on the field has come to a close, his contributions to Egyptian football remain appreciated by fans across the clubs he represented.
Bakkar’s retirement marks a new chapter for the player, who has left behind a legacy of hard work and professionalism.
As he steps away from the sport, he joins the ranks of many players who have hung up their boots after making their mark on the domestic and continental football scene.
